Large consumer-facing companies, agricultural producers, NGOs and even governments are intent on reducing deforestation from commodity production and making supply chains more environmentally sustainable. To identify cutting-edge solutions – and to build and strengthen the partnerships that will be key to implementation – Forest Trends convened Katoomba XIX – Scaling up Sustainable Supply Chains in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil (March 2014). Over 200 representatives from the cattle and soy industries, financial institutions, government agencies, deforestation experts, and civil society organizations participated.
Our strategic framework, Agriculture and Forest Commodities: From Drivers of Deforestation to Sustainability Champions, outlines key mechanisms that stakeholders identified as vital to scaling up sustainable supply chains and dramatically reducing deforestation – territorial performance systems, integrated public-private financing, and a holistic approach to global sustainability that includes critical players such as China.
