Consultation

Between May 2008 and mid-October 2008, the BBOP Secretariat plans to initiate a process of consultation on the three draft BBOP Handbooks on biodiversity offsets and other elements of the Methodology Toolkit, seeking feedback and suggestions from interested persons to help us improve the quality and usefulness of the materials.

The schedule for this consultation process will be revised and kept up to date on this page.  Please see table below.

Please contact us by email at:  bbop@forest-trends.org if:

  • You have comments to share with the BBOP Secretariat on the Principles on biodiversity offsets and the BBOP Phase II Scope of Work (see below).  These two topics are contained within a broader consultation paper prepared for the meeting of the 9th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity.  The paper is presented here in its entirety to give context to the objectives and activities of the program.
  • You are working on biodiversity offsets and would like to see detailed draft BBOP methodologies that are not yet posted here; you would be interested in joining a consultation meeting on specific aspect of the Methodology Toolkit; or you would like to meet with us to discuss the program and Methodology Toolkit.
  • You have suggestions on other meetings that BBOP should attend to seek feedback from various stakeholders.

Biodiversity offsets are conservation actions designed to compensate for the unavoidable impact on biodiversity caused by infrastructure projects, to ensure “no net loss,” and, preferably, a net gain of biodiversity. Offsets are only appropriate in the context of developments that are legal and appropriate, and when the developer has first used best practice to avoid and minimize harm to biodiversity
